Very few people know that Asia's biggest mosque is in Bhopal. Taj Ul Masajid, Build by the Nawab of Bhopal. It's completion was done by his begum.
"Taj-ul-Masajid" "The Crown of Mosques" by Sultan Shah Jahan, Begum of Bhopal (1868-1901), resembling Mughal architecture. Pink facade marble domes,Marble flooring,Massive pillars,Minarets, A double storeyed gateway with 4 recessed archways and 9 cusped multifold openings in the main prayer hall.

Hawwa (Eve) (AS)

Hawwa was the first woman and the first Muslimah to be created by Allah (s.w.t).

Hawwa represents, on the one hand, womanhood and, on the other, the source of human population. In fact, her name means "the source of life". Hawwa also has another meaning which is used to denote a reddy colour that is closer to the darker tone. There is an opinion that this could allude to her skin colour.

The name Hawwa itself is not mentioned in the Qur'an but is mentioned in hadeeth literature. For it is there that we get such information as the meaning of her name, how she was created and how many children she had.

For instance, Hawwa, according to the Qur'an, was created from Adam (see Surah an-Nisaa:1 and Surah az-Zumar:6). From Bukhari, this was further elucidated and we find that Hawwa was created from the upper rib of Adam.

Narrated Abu Huraira (r) Allah's Apostle (s) said: "Treat women nicely, for a woman is created from a rib, and the most curved portion of the rib is its upper portion, so, if you should try to straighten it, it will break; but if you leave it as it is, it will remain crooked. So treat women nicely." (Bukhari) This hadeeth does not literally mean that women are crooked or evil by nature. What it means is that women are delicate and should be treated gently and with care. Furthermore, it has been explained that the breakage of the rib in case one tries to straighten it, stands for divorce which is the natural results of disagreement between the wife and her husband. In the Qur'an, the story of Adam and Hawwa can be found in three places, namely Surah al-Baqara:30-39, Surah al-A'araf:11-25, and Surah Ta-Ha:116-123. As the story goes, Allah created Adam from clay and taught him the names of things, that is knowledge. Then Allah said in the Qur'an (surah Ta-Ha:116-123):

When We said to the angels, "prostrate yourselves to Adam", they prostrated themselves, but Iblis: he refused. Then We said "O Adam! Verily this is an enemy to you and your wife: so let him not get you both out of the Garden, so that you art landed in misery. There is therein (enough provision) for you not to go hungry nor go naked. Nor to suffer from thirst, nor from the sun's heat.

But Satan whispered evil to him. He said "O Adam! Shall I lead you to the tree of eternity and to a kingdom that never decays?" In the result, they both ate of the tree, and so their nakedness appeared to them: they began to sew together, for their covering, leaves from the Garden: Thus did Adam disobey his Lord and fell into error.

But his Lord chose him (for His Grace): He turned to him and gave him guidance. He said "Get you down both of you, all together, from the Garden, with enmity one to another: but if as is sure, there comes to you guidance from Me, whosoever follows My guidance will not lose his way nor fall into misery.

In all cultures and its religious beliefs, traces of the story of Adam and Hawwa can be found, though it has been greatly distorted. However, it is important to note that the Quranic story of Adam and Hawwa differs from the Old Testament in that :

(i) Both Adam and Hawwa were equally guilty of disobeying Allah by eating from "that" tree. "That" tree does not mean an apple tree. Only Allah knows what fruit "that" tree bears.

(ii) Allah forgave Adam's and Hawwa's sins before their descent to earth.

(iii) It was part of Allah's will that Adam and Hawwa were to reside on earth. For, Allah in surah al-Baqara, ayah 30, He said that He is creating Adam as a vicegerent on earth. Furthermore, from the hadeeth we have: Abu Hurairah reported: The Apostle of Allah (s) said: 'When Adam and Moses held a discussion, Adam won. Moses said: "You are the same Adam who set people astray and had them ousted from Heaven". Adam asked: "Art you the same Moses whom Allah gave knowledge of all things and honoured you with Apostleship?" He replied: "Yes!" Adam said: "And yet you accused me of that which has written in my fate!" (Al-Muwatta')

When Adam and Hawwa landed on earth they were separated. According to traditions Hawwa landed in Jeddah while Adam landed somewhere in India (some say in Sri Lanka). Then on the ninth of Zhuh Hijjah, they met at 'Arafat. Thus, began their life together on earth till they were called back to Allah.

Hawwa gave birth twenty times and each time she had twins with the exception of her last birth, where she gave birth to only a son. In other words, she had thirty-nine children in total. The gap between each birth was two years.

Life History Of Renovator of the Tablighi Jama'at, Maulana Muhammad Ilyas

Molana Tariq Jamil is an active member of the Tablighi Jamaat, its main aim is to spread the message of Islam and peace to the muslims and non muslimis alike around the world.

Here is an article about the Tablighi Jamaat :

Life History Of Renovator of the Tablighi Jama'at, Maulana Muhammad Ilyas... As the Original was Muhammad (PBUH)

It was an ache that it distressed him all the time; he couldn't eat, he couldn't sleep. was a worry that had engulfed all other worries; it was a topic, the explanation and elucidation of which took up all energies of his tongue and pen to the extent that writing on any other subject was a trial for him. He had written to Shaykhul Hadith Maulana Zakarya (rahimuhullah),

"My heartfelt desire is that at least my brain, thought, time, and energy should be limited to nothing but this work."He used to say, "How can any other occupation be lawful for me when I see that the soul of Rasulullah (sallallahu 'alaihe wasallam) is distressed (because of the weakness of the Muslims' faith and the supremacy of kufr)."

One day an attendant complained that he saw a lack of attention and affection in his behaviour as previously compared. He replied, "I am very busy; I feel that Rasulullah (sallallahu 'alaihe wasallam) is in distress; I cannot pay attention to anything else."

He did not attend gatherings where there was little chance of putting forward his message; he disliked going for the sake of an obligation only. He used to say, "If you go to a place, go with your message and put it forward, keep your invitation above anything."

Once in Delhi, he had to perforce attend a wedding ceremony of an acquaintance. He addressed the gathering at the wedding thus, "Today is the happiest of days for you when even the lowliest is pleased; it is not done to displease even the sweeperess tell me! Do you have any concern of pleasing Rasulullah (sallallahu 'alaihe wasallam)?" then he explained that the endeavour to revive the deen brought by Rasulullah (sallallahu 'alaihe wasallam) was the greatest way to please him (sallallahu 'alaihe wasallam).

This fine references are of the founder of the Tablighi Jama'at, Maulana Muhammad Ilyas Noorullah marqadahu, who adored calling to the Faith to such extent that all other sensory pleasures and opinions were dimmed before them; this spiritual pleasure had become sensory and natural for him.

Once, Maulana had defined 'Ishq', (adoration) as such, "The pleasures and interests of man that are divided between so many things come out and converge at one point; this is Ishq." This definition was personified in the Maulana himself. He used to sob and cry on the departure of the ummah from its deen. Sometimes he used to writhe in pain, sigh, sob, and complain, "O Allah! What else should I do? I am not doing enough." Sometimes he used to turn agonizingly on his bed, then get up and pace the room. One night his wife at last asked him, "What is the matter? Can you not sleep?" he answered, "What can I tell you? If you get to know what I do then the waking ones will become two."

The result of this heart ache and dedication to his aim was that in just a few years, the ache that had bothered one breast caught fire in hundreds. The Mewatis who had become half Hindu despite being called Muslims, who celebrated many of the Hindu festivals, whose villages rarely had a Masjid in them, who even used to kill their newborns; suddenly, little beacons of light sprung up in the same Mewati dwellings. Masajid were built, religious schools and madaris mushroomed, the number of huffaz exceeded hundreds, and there was a good number of qualified `ulama. The birth of the love of Imaan extinguished the following of kufr. The customs and traditions that had come to be a way of life for them began to be eradicated.

An experienced Mewati explained this in a very clear manner when he was asked what was happening in his area; he said, "I don't know anything else, what I do know is some things for which we used to strive and they did not happen, are happening on their own; some things which we tried to stop with battles and great endeavour and did not stop, are being stopped on their own."

Hazrat Maulana Muhammad Ilyas had a keen concern that if the `ulama did not overlook the preaching and this task was left to the common man alone, it would develop lots of flaws. His wish was for the educated `ulama to take an interest in this task and use their God gifted talents for the propagation of this work. Because most of his life Maulana had been associated to learning, he knew intimately the pursuits of the madaris, its teachers, and students. He wanted them to join hands with this work of calling to God but he also wanted a way out that would help those of the madaris in their learning but not interfere with it. He writes, "Deen can progress and develop according to the progress and development of learning, and under the progress and development of learning. It would be the greatest of losses if my movement caused any set back to learning. I do not mean by tabligh to prevent or hurt progress towards learning"

He used to council the groups going in the way of Allah for tabligh to sit and learn from the gatherings of elders with the intention of improving oneself, and never to mention their own work in their presence. If the elders asked anything of their own accord, well and good, otherwise they were to keep silent. He wrote to Shaykhul Hadith Maulana Zakarya rahamahullah 'alaih, "I have an old wish, that these groups benefit from the khanqahs, keeping to all the manners of khanqahs, and that the missionary work be done in particular timings in surrounding villages.

(Please) make a plan concerning this after council with the coming groups. This humble person is also overwhelmed with the wish to attend with some companions; I am also thinking of Deoband and Thana Bhawan."

Hakim-ul-Ummah, Hazrat Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanvi was of the opinion that when `ulama educated for eight to ten years failed to solve some matters when on mission work, what would the ignorant Mewatis do without any formal education and training? His cautious and farsighted nature was unsatisfied and he feared some harm would come out of it. But when he received continuous news that the groups were working under supervision of the `ulama and getting guidance from them, and that they did not mention anything for which they were not allowed, he became satisfied.

The founder of the Jama'at always tried to link the workers of Tabligh to the `ulama. He used to stress the importance of `ulama, the need to benefit from them, the rewards of meeting them, and used to teach the manners of talking to them. He used to educate the workers to take the best possible explanation of things they did not understand and keep their faith in the scholars. The results of this effort became apparent when those big businessmen who were against the `ulama started attending their gatherings with respect and reverence and invited them for discourses to their congregations. They did not have the condition that only those `ulama would give talks who had spent time in the Jama'at; all authentic and righteous `ulama were invited.

The connection of Shaykhul Islam Maulana Sayyed Hussein Ahmad Madani (rahimuhullah) with politics was no secret, but he often gave discourses in gatherings although he had not spent any formal time in the Jama'at. Maulana Sayyed Abul Hassan Ali Nadvi (rahimuhullah), who was the heart and soul of Nadvatul `ulama and who is unaware of the barrier between the Nadwah and the rest of the madaris because of its special ambience and isolation of some of its founders his dealing with the founder of the Jama'at was totally different. Hazrat Ilyas respected and loved all `ulama and so he did Ali Mian (rahimuhullah), and gave importance to his advise.

One day Ali Mian said that although the Nadwah had always extended an effectionate hand towards the people of deen, they had seldom had a positive response; thank God that he, Maulana Ilyas, had been loving towards them. Tears ran down Maulana's face and he said, "What are you saying? Your Jama'at is that of deen; I am not in favour of leaving out even the people from Aligarh." Besides Ali Mian, Hazrat Maulana Manzoor Ahmad Naumani rahimihullah was also among Maulana's close associates. Hazrat Maulana Abdul Qadir Raipoori was also a frequent visitor.

Not even a blind person can deny the fruit born by the whole world seems in a stir by its blessing, millions of people have been reformed by joining it; but despite all this, there is a need for guidance from the `ulama at each step. God forbid, if a rift is created between the Jama'at and the `ulama and the `ulama are made to follow the Jama'at instead of the other way round, it will have grave results for the religious circles.

The Foundation of Darul Uloom Deoband

It was at a small place near the capital, Thana Bhavan, in the District of Muzaffarnagar where some of the greatest leaders of religious opinion gathered together. These men had come came to Haji Imdadullah Sahib to point out to him that the Muslims were without a ruler. Since Haji Imdadullah was their religious leader, they suggested that he assume responsibility for their worldly guidance by agreeing to become ‘Amir ul Mu’mineen’. Haji Saheb was then persuaded to accede to their request and did for some time act as a Qazi (Judge) and ruled between civil and criminal cases.

Maulana Rashid Ahmed Gangohi Saheb Rahmatullahi Alayhi and Maulana Qasim Nanotvi Rahmatullahi Alayhi and their dependants lived here in Thana Bhavan as their services were required by Haji Saheb.

They then began to think about the problem of saving the community and action from the onslaught of atheism and Christianity that had come in the wake of the British rule in the sub-continent. They did so in order to prevent the so called ‘modern’ culture and civilisation from distorting their religious beliefs, conduct, actions and ways of thought.

Hazrat Qasim Nanotvi Rahmatullahi Alayhi and his colleagues together with their spiritual guide Haji Imdadullah unanimously decided that a chain of religious educational institutions should at once be started. It was also decided that the first institution of this kind should be started in the township of Deoband rather than in any big city. It was in accordance with these decisions that the foundation of Darul Uloom Deoband was laid on the 15 th of Muharram 1283 AH ( 21 st May 1866).

At that time it was simply called the ‘Islamic-Arabic Madrasa’ and soon came to be known throughout the world as ‘Ummul-Madaris’ (the mother of Madrasas). The founding of this madrasah led to the establishment of another at Saharanpur. Very soon, a whole chain of Madrasahs came to be founded which included Manz-ul-Uloom at Galauthi, Madrasah-e-Shahi at Murzdebad. One at Thana Bhavan, one at Mau and various others. All these institutions were in some way or other directly related to Darul Uloom Deoband.

In view if the difficult and trying circumstances threatening the very existence of the Islamic faith at that time, it was quite natural that the courses of study at Darul Uloom Deoband be kept very strictly within the confines of religious and theological study.

The Qur’an and Sunnah, Jurisprudence and Islamic Scholasticism were to be the corner-stone of the Syllabi, and other branches of learning such as grammar, literature, logic, philosophy and Mathematics were included only in so far as they helped in the study of the core subjects.

One important consideration was the fact that the learning of many languages and sciences would have a distracting effect on the students. Maulana Qasim Nanotvi said that this was so the student would devote himself to the modern sciences after he has perfected himself in the traditional ones. He clearly stated that the students of Darul Uloom should do well to go on to university or college to receive instruction in Modern Sciences after receiving religious education at Darul Uloom.

The Popularity of Darul Uloom Deoband

Allah Taa’la has given extraordinary popularity to the great seminary at Deoband; it is this popularity that has enabled it to serve the nation as well as the community in a remarkable way. One of the main reasons for this is the fact that Darul Uloom has never been merely an educational institution; it has also been a great centre for preparing the youth for the practical affairs of life. Darul Uloom gives to its student’s purity of conduct and excellence of morals along with access to the great treasure-house of knowledge.

The whole world knows that the students of Darul Uloom possess, on one hand, the scholarly dignity and self-respect, and on the other, humility, generosity, simplicity and purity. It was the first institution that depended entirely on contributions from the ordinary members of the public. This institution has also the distinction of having been founded in response to a real historical need though the majority of people at that time were not aware of that need.

May Allah Taa’la shower his blessings on the founders of Darul Uloom Deoband and also on the very people that contributed towards this Darul Uloom.

It was due to the sincerity of these Ulama (Scholars) that not a single part of the Indian Sub-continent has remained uninfluenced by the great institution.

The disciples of the learned scholars at Deoband have spread far and wide within the country and around the world.

The services rendered by the Darul Uloom have generally been acknowledged throughout the world, and glorious tributes have been paid to them.

One such commentator writes, “May Allah bless the founders of Darul Uloom Deoband because of their efforts the sound of ‘thus did Allah say’ and ‘thus did the Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wassallam say’ have thus been resounding in at least the ears of the common people. The greatest defence of tradition, against attacks from modern religious rationalism, was made by the people of Deoband……Deoband is not merely an educational institution but a powerful movement which has played an effective role which has been a source of much inspiration both in theoretical and practical manners.”

It is not difficult to see that the source of varied activities by the likes of Sheikul Hadith Maulana Anwar Shah Kashmiri Rahmatullahi Alayhi, Sheikul Islam Hazrat Maulana Sayyed Hussain Ahmed Madani Saheb Rahmatullahi Alayhi, Sheikul Hind Hazrat Maulana Mahmudul Hasan Saheb Rahmatullahi Alayhi, Sheikut Tafseer Hazrat Maulana Shabbir Ahmed Usmani and others is none other than Darul Uloom Deoband.

Another writer states, “No sane person can deny the fact that it was the great Scholars of the Darul Uloom of Deoband who went to the nooks and corners of the country and defended the pure faith against attacks from modification and heresy.

The graduates of Deoband can be seen giving instructions in the excellence of morals and conduct from the mimbars of mosques throughout the world. We can have some idea of the extent of the services rendered by Darul Uloom Deoband from the fact that the number of its Scholars who completed the syllabus exceeds 34,000 including almost 2,000 in the year 2005 alone. That is excluding graduates of the Qari and Mufti classes which mass up to an amazing 106,000.

From across the world for example, Afghanistan, Russia , China, Australia, America, United Kingdom, Burma, Malaysia, Indonesia, Iraq and many more.

May Allah Taa’la bless Hazrat Nanotvi Rahmatullahi Alayhi and his colleagues and disciples for having strongly and successfully defended Islam against all its antagonists. They went out to sing praises of Islam and its Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wassallam throughout the country and beyond. They silenced many by giving well-argued and crushing replies to their objections against Islam.

May Allah Taa’la give us the true understanding and love for our elders and keep us under the shade of the great Ulama of Deoband and its branches of Madrasahs. Ameen
